Despite Din Djarin's disdain for droids, we happen to love them quite a bit here at Customs for the Kid. Since "The Prisoner" aired in 2019, Q9-0 has been a droid we've discussed making. There were many technical hurdles we would have had to overcome to make him due to his unique parts. There aren't any droids you can easily borrow parts from to build him, and sculpting all of his details with perfect symmetry would be so challenging, it borders on not being worth the trouble. I could always open up ZBrush and sculpt him from the ground up, but thanks to the skills and generosity of Angry Raccoon Miniatures, I don't have to!
Darth Daddy based the figure out with some un-diluted water based black airbrush paint. You'll want to keep your brush clean to avoid the brush hardening, but the color coverage is strong, and the consistency is thin so it doesn't bury all the important details if you apply it quickly. Once Darth Daddy finished the base coat, I dry brushed some rust colors over it. I hand painted in the details such as the utility belts and the silver paint chips. Once all of those things were finished, I spray sealed him. I feel some of the rust color I had dry brushed onto him got lost after sealing him. If you attempt this yourself, either use a richer color, or use a sealer that won't alter the look of the surface as much as a matte sealer. After sealing, I used a fine tip Molotow chrome pen on his eyes to achieve a mirror effect. Note that the smoothness of the surface you apply the ink to can affect how well the mirror finish develops.
We're happy to finally bring this character to life in the 3.75" scale, and we're excited to get the crew from "The Prisoner" just a bit closer to completion! Stay tuned!
