DARTH DADDY's CUSTOMIZING CORNER: YakFace

Darth Daddy's Customizing Corner featured Star Wars customizer YakFace in his latest post over at The Star Wars Underworld.

Brent Gothold aka YakFace just graduated from film school (F.I.R.S.T Institute of Recording Sound and Technology) and has been working as a freelance FX artist specializing in building miniatures. He was living and working in Los Angeles, but moved to Florida 8 months ago and just started work for Universal Studios Orlando doing FX makeup for Halloween Horror Nights. He has a new website that features the professional work that he's been doing for the film industry. His career goal is to open up his own FX studio that will be a full service FX company that blends traditional FX techniques like scale models, practical makeup, and props with cutting edge computer graphics. He's currently learning as much as he can about the traditional techniques and plans to advance his skills with CGI over the next year.

He posted his first custom Star Wars diorama of the Sarlaac Pit at age 15 and is currently posting custom figures over at the Imperial Shipyards. Brent mostly creates characters from the original Star Wars trilogy but is working on making some original characters that will fit nicely among the characters from a galaxy far far away. YakFace is a talented sculptor and painter who transforms "toys" into art pieces.

"R2-D2: BIG HAY-ZU" created by Elias

Hay-Zu, also known as The Big Hay-Zu, was an overlord of the Patitite people. He was rather obese for his species, being carried by four Patitites on a throne to show power and vanity. He ruled over the people in a manner that made his people hate him.

C-3PO was praised for accidentally crushing him to death with R2-D2.

"Nomad Droids" is where you'll see this version of R2-D2 that Elias has created. It only took a little bit of paint to create this figure since no structural modifications were needed.

DARTH DADDY's CUSTOMIZING CORNER: CustomJedi

Darth Daddy's Customizing Corner featured Star Wars customizer, CustomJedi, in his latest post over at The Star Wars Underworld.

 Zuckuss with custom soft goods.

A.J. Derroe aka CustomJedi has just returned to customizing after a very long hiatus that lasted more than a decade.  He's happily returned to customizing and has been having lots of fun with Star Wars since he's been back.  Recently CustomJedi has been creating collector's Mos Eisley Cantina and Jabba's Palace "wish list" one figure at a time.

CustomJedi was making Star Wars custom action figures way back when Power of the Force was on the pegs in the 90's.  I'm a huge fan of his POTF style Baniss Keeg.  I'd be perfectly content it if Hasbro released this character with 5 POA as long as it looked as good as CustomJedi's version.

As an artist that still has a great deal to learn about soft goods, I really envy the skills of CustomJedi.  His soft good work on Zuckuss and Bib Fortuna are "Most Impressive!"

CustomJedi is an artist that puts that little extra into his projects, taking his time to create small details like his magnetically attached restraining bolt for his C-3PO.

CustomJedi's Drumheller Harp is one of the coolest accessories I've ever seen made, and left we wanting one of my own. What I love most about this artist is that he shares his techniques and posts pictures in his forum thread of how he built the instrument.

Be sure to keep an eye on this veteran customizer.  He's sure to impress!

DARTH DADDY's CUSTOMIZING CORNER: DARTH DUSTY

Darth Daddy's Customizing Corner featured Star Wars customizer Darth Dusty in the latest Customizing Corner over at The Star Wars Underworld.

Yes, there is another Darth.   In the Star Wars custom action figure community there is no rule of two.

Darth Dusty is an artist that has been drawing, painting, and sculpting for over twenty-five years, and customizing for over ten. He mainly enjoys customizing figures from the Expanded Universe now known as Star Wars Legends, as well as creating characters of his own. His goal is to give people something rare and unique; to challenge himself to make customs of characters that may never see the light of day on a store shelf.

Mostly creating figures for adult collectors, Darth Dusty loves to incorporate soft goods, and hand sculpting new parts. Darth Dusty uses many materials, such as, Apoxie Sculpt, acrylic paints, casting resins, and even puffy paint, as key elements in each creation. Darth Dusty researches many of the figures he plans to build to get as much accuracy as possible without compromising the functionality of the action figure.

He has made the widest assortment of figures from the video games The Force Unleashed and The Force Unleashed II than any other customizer I've encountered and I'm a big fan of his samurai interpretations of Vader, the Stormtrooper and Boba Fett.  He's a huge talent!  I made a video of his work early last year if anyone wants to see more from this artist after reading this feature.

Fairly retired from doing commissioned figures, he loves hearing ideas on what figures to make. Darth Dusty keeps a list of characters on the back burner, so expect to see plenty more figures to come.
